PASSIVE VOICE – CORRECTION

1. Make passive form from the given phrases. Mind the tense in brackets.

Black people – lynch – members of the KKK (preterit)

=> Black people were lynched by members of the KKK.

The judge’s son – hang (preterit)

=> The judge’s son was hung.

He judge – before

=> He had been judged before.

She – listen very carefully – her students (continuous present)

=> She is being listened to very carefully by her students.

2. Rewrite the active sentences into the passive voice. Mention the agent only when necessary.

Somebody assassinated Martin Luther King

=> Martin Luther King was assassinated.

The driver had asked them to get off the bus

=> They had been asked to get off the bus.

The story of Rosa Parks has really moved me

> I have been really moved by the story of Rosa Parks.

My teacher is teaching me what happened to black people in the USA

=> I am being taught what happened to black people in the USA.

I have to learn my lesson about the KKK

=> My lesson about the KKK has to be learnt.

The neighbors were always staring at the little black girl

=> The little black girl was always being stared at.

3. Translate into English. Use a passive voice in each sentence.

Les personnes noires se voyaient refuser le droit de s’assoir devant dans les bus de Georgia.

=> Black people were not allowed to sit in the front of buses in Georgia.

=> Black people were forbidden the right to sit in the front of buses in Georgia.

Le jeune home rentrait tranquillement chez lui quand il a été lynché.

=> The young man was quietly walking home / going back home when he was lynched.

Plusieurs membres du Klan ont été envoyés en prison et d’autres ont été condamnées à la peine de mort.

=> Several Klansmen were sent to jail and others were sentenced to death.

Luther King faisait un discours quand des coups de feu furent entendus.

=> A speech was being delivered by Luther King when gunshots were heard.

Les discriminations raciales ne devraient plus être autorisées de nos jours.

=> Nowadays, racial discriminations should be allowed anymore.

=> Nowadays, racial segregation should no longer be tolerated.

Elle a probablement dû être battue / frappe à cause de sa couleur de peau.

=> She might have been hit / beaten / lynched because of her skin color.
